Welcome from Executive Director
Laura Bloomensaat

Welcome to the Miss Washtenaw County Pageant family! Although the Covid Pandemic has affected all of us, we have been working hard to bring back our local pageant and to make your Miss America experience the best ever. Congratulations on taking your first step towards the title of Miss America 2023!  This fall we will be presenting our 26th annual pageant.  It will be held at the Washington Street Education Center Auditorium on Saturday October 9, 2021.  We are very excited to plan again and  that you want to become a candidate for the title of Miss Washtenaw County 2021!
Participating in a Miss America Local Preliminary is a wonderful and unique experience.  You will gain poise and confidence, hone your interview and public speaking skills, make many new friends, and become a part of the largest scholarship organization for young women in the nation.  Our Executive Board and committee members work year round to make this experience and scholarship money available to you.  Along with all that you will gain by becoming a candidate, there are certain expectations of you.  The best time to begin your preparation is now.  Fall brings with it a return to school, homework, exams, and new activities.  Please take this into consideration as you make your decision. By sending your application in you are making a commitment to the Miss Washtenaw County Scholarship Program.  Once applications are received much preliminary work is completed to accommodate you.  Program book layout is done, schedules for interviews, and judge’s paperwork and notebooks are printed.  The time to make a thoughtful decision as to whether or not you will compete is before you send your application in!
The Miss Washtenaw County Pageant has a minimal number of rehearsals to make it easier for you and thus each meeting is crucial to our success.  Candidates are allowed one excused absence from a rehearsal.  We ask that you be respectful of your fellow Candidates and our staff by honoring your commitment.  The Candidate Calendar will be finalized by late spring and posted at that time.  One date that has been confirmed is our Orientation.  It will be held Sunday September 12th.  The time, place, and required paperwork are TBD and will be included on the Candidate Calendar.  Orientation is a relaxed gathering and an informational meeting.  It is our chance to get acquainted, for you to meet the other candidates, Miss Washtenaw Volunteers, and for you to become familiar with the Miss America Organization.  Parents or friends are welcome to attend with you.
All Candidate entry requirements are detailed in the Eligibility Requirements document. Miss America has adopted a new entry fee format.  The fee amount for each Candidate at the local level is $100.  The funds generated from this provides scholarships that are then awarded to candidates at the local, state, and national level.   Please read the Eligibility Requirements, follow carefully, and be prepared to submit all requirements in a timely matter.  I am happy to answer any questions you might have.
Candidates should plan to submit their own headshots for the program book.  These will be submitted electronically.  You are also responsible for submitting your talent music (if needed) in an MP3 format.  Instructions will be given for submitting both at a later time.
Our new Miss Washtenaw will have a year of opportunities ahead of her.  She will become our representative throughout the community as well as being our representative at the Miss Michigan Pageant to bheld in Muskegon in June 2022. The title of Miss Washtenaw County is a job.  While the year of service is an incredible experience for a young woman, it also comes with the expectation that she will honor her commitment to this organization and to the sponsors that support us.  Although Miss Washtenaw’s appearance schedule will be tailored to fit her own schedule she typically makes 50 appearances throughout the entire year.  Miss Washtenaw County must be available for all activities and preparations leading up to the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant.  The Executive Board will help her develop her Social Impact Initiative and prepare for all areas of competition.  Miss Washtenaw is also expected to participate at the events preceding and to perform at our 2022 Pageant.  If you become our new Miss Washtenaw County, plan to be available the day after the pageant to meet with the Executive Director and begin plans for the exciting year ahead!
We look forward to having you participate with us and to meeting you at orientation.  Please feel free to contact me, by phone or email, with any questions or for advice.  Best wishes with your preparations, have fun, and Good Luck!
